The B.L.A.C.K. Outreach San Jose, standing for Black Liberation and Collective Knowledge, is a community organization started by a group of young adult activists in June of 2020 in response to the nationwide call for systemic change from the Black Lives Matter movement.
Their mission reads as follows: “We work for the overall advancement, liberation, education, and health improvement of the African American diaspora. We will eradicate police brutality; while establishing economic stability for all people.”
This group of organizers and advocates has launched many programs to give back to their community and encourage change, such as Feed The Block that cooks, packages, and distributes over 300 meals every Saturday morning to local homeless encampments and Solidarity From the Outside that raises mutual funds for those incarcerated citizens needing proper funding to sustain themselves. The collective aims to promote "The Black Agenda," a series of steps in systemic change including financial literacy education and affordable housing that will help to improve the lives of the marginalized and vulnerable communities living among us.
This Saturday, February 19th, B.L.A.C.K. Outreach will be hosting a Community Cookout, featuring a wide variety of black vendors and artists. The event will be held from 1:00-6:00 p.m., with pickup basketball and football games, skate rinks, live performances, and free food from various vendors.
They are still accepting submissions for performers and vendors on their website. All are encouraged to join in the celebration of the San Jose black community. Contact B.L.A.C.K. Outreach on their Instagram, Twitter, or website if you would like to volunteer for set up or have any questions about the event.
